Toonz, the software used by Studio Ghibli to produce films like The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo and The Wind Rises, will be made free and open source to the animation community beginning March 26, 2016. The acclaimed Japanese animation producer has been long-time user of Toonz software. Toonz was used in Ghibli titles including Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away. While OpenToonz will be available to the masses, Digital Video will continue to develop its own Toonz Premium software fork, aimed at professionals and sold "at a very competitive price". With one announcement, the animation software game may have changed forever. OpenToonz will include features developed by Studio Ghibli (Toonz Ghibli Edition). The tool behind some of the animated films from acclaimed movie-maker Studio Ghibli will soon be free for devs to use.
